René Santiago Named WBA Champion in Recess; Kira to Face Cañizales for Vacant Light‑Flyweight Title

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has designated René Santiago as Champion in Recess after his team reported an injury that prevents him from making a mandatory defence against Daiya Kira. The WBA Medical Committee will review Santiago’s medical documentation before deciding on his return.

Following the decision, the WBA ordered the No. 1‑ranked contender from Japan, Daiya Kira, to fight the No. 2‑ranked challenger from Venezuela, Carlos Cañizales, for the vacant WBA World Light Flyweight (108 lb) championship. The bout is scheduled for 2 September in Yokohama, Japan, and the winner will later be required to meet Santiago when he is cleared to compete.
