René Wilke advocates for citizen dialogue to combat polarization

Brandenburg Health Minister René Wilke (SPD) is advocating for increased direct dialogue between citizens to combat rising social polarization and hatred in Germany. Wilke describes this approach as a form of ‘confrontation therapy,’ suggesting that personal exchange can help dismantle stereotypes and de-escalate tensions.

These calls for a ‘culture of encounter’ follow significant political shifts in East Germany, specifically the state election in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, 2026. In that election, the AfD saw a major surge, reaching 43.8 percent of the vote—more than double its 2021 result—while the CDU experienced substantial losses of nearly 20 percentage points.

Wilke warned that polarization is being fueled by anxieties regarding migration and a pronounced proximity to Russia. He argues that intentional engagement with differing viewpoints is a necessary tool to restore social cohesion and reduce prejudices.
