Marco Rubio delivers Acropolis speech linking ancient Greece to the West
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a speech at the Pnyx in Athens, where he asserted that the West was born in Athens and emphasized the deep connection between ancient Greek civilization and the American republic. Rubio called on European nations to bolster their defense, industry, and national sovereignty to navigate the coming decade.
Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis welcomed the visit, stating that Greece plays a leading role in the international security architecture. However, the visit drew criticism from opposition leader Rena Dourou, who condemned the Greek government for failing to address the Cyprus issue during Rubio's stay.
In response to the speech, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei accused Rubio of distorting history by attempting to present Western history as a seamless continuum from ancient Greece to the United States.
