Renalidades campaign targets awareness for rare kidney diseases

The Renalidades campaign has launched at the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid to increase visibility for rare kidney diseases, specifically C3 glomerulopathy (C3G) and primary immune complex-mediated membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (IC-MPGN).

C3G is a chronic, ultra-rare condition affecting the glomeruli that can lead to irreversible kidney damage. Globally, between one and three new cases are diagnosed per million inhabitants annually. Data indicates that approximately 50% of patients with either C3G or primary IC-MPGN progress to renal failure within ten years of diagnosis.

The initiative is driven by the biopharmaceutical company Sobi in collaboration with the National Federation of Associations for the Fight against Kidney Diseases (ALCER) and the Association for Information and Research on Genetic Kidney Diseases (AIRG-E). Clinical challenges include the complexity of diagnosis, which often requires renal biopsies and immunofluorescence studies to differentiate C3G from other conditions.
