Renamo faces internal crisis amid leadership disputes in Mozambique

Internal tensions are escalating within Renamo, Mozambique’s main opposition party, following a series of public accusations between high-ranking members. Geraldo Carvalho, the party’s national mobilization chief, has criticized António Muchanga, accusing him of acting in favor of external interests and promoting an agenda beneficial to the ruling Frelimo party.

Carvalho has also challenged Muchanga’s legitimacy regarding decisions over party leadership organs and warned of a firm response to efforts to close party delegations. In response, Muchanga dismissed Carvalho as “insignificant” and “irrelevant,” questioning his loyalty due to his political history. Muchanga has instead directed his criticism toward party president Ossufo Momade, accusing the leadership of violating statutes by failing to convene mandatory organizational meetings.

Renamo spokesperson Marcial Macome has acknowledged the internal disagreements and called for strict adherence to the party’s statutes.
