Renan Santos faces student protests at USP Law School
The National Union of Students (UNE) and the XI de Agosto Academic Center of the University of São Paulo (USP) Law School have called for a protest against presidential candidate Renan Santos. The demonstration is scheduled for Thursday, August 13, in response to Santos's decision to launch his official campaign at Largo São Francisco.
Student organizations described the historic site as a “territory of democracy, liberty, and resistance,” stating they oppose the use of the space to promote what they characterize as far-right projects. Renan Santos, a candidate for the Missão party, plans to hold a campaign event at the same location on Sunday, August 16, expecting to gather approximately 2,000 supporters.
Santos has defended the legality of his event, stating he has obtained all necessary documentation and authorization from the Military Police. He criticized the student mobilization as “ridiculous,” arguing that the organizers are attempting to suppress democratic processes and that the protest will ultimately serve as free publicity for his campaign.
