Renan Vieira uses Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to move from Brazil to China

Renan Vieira, a 25-year-old from the São Gonçalo favela near Rio de Janeiro, has transitioned from a struggling youth to a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) instructor in Shanghai, China. Vieira credits the sport and the social project ‘Vencedores em Cristo’ for providing opportunities that helped him escape poverty and personal hardship.

His journey serves as an inspiration for young trainers in his home community, demonstrating how martial arts can offer a path away from crime and economic instability. Vieira, who once shared kimonos with several other children due to lack of funds, has since achieved a black belt and international professional success.
