Renata Cambra emerges as central figure in Lisbon housing protests
Renata Cambra, a 35-year-old teacher, has become a prominent figure in the housing rights protests currently taking place in Rossio, Lisbon. Her prominence follows a successful legal challenge that allowed a protest tent to remain in the square.
Cambra’s political background presents a sharp ideological contrast to her family history. She is the granddaughter of Manuel Cambra, who served as the Mayor of São João da Madeira representing the CDS-PP, a center-right party. In contrast, Renata Cambra has been associated with left-wing movements, including Bloco de Esquerda and the Movimento Alternativa Socialista (MAS), and is currently linked to the Trotskyist-inspired movement Trabalhadores Unidos.
Her political activism began during her studies at the University of Coimbra, where she participated in movements against tuition fees and austerity measures. After working as a teacher in Germany, she returned to Portugal to intensify her political involvement, previously running as a candidate for MAS in the 2022 legislative elections.
