Renato Romagnoli, 99‑year‑old former partisan leader, dies in Bologna

Renato Romagnoli, known by his wartime nom de guerre “Italiano,” died at age 99 in Bologna. A veteran of the Italian Resistance, he participated in key actions such as the liberation of prisoners from San Giovanni in Monte, the battles of Porta Lame and the Bolognina, and the final liberation of the city in April 1945. After the war he served for many years as president of ANPI, the National Association of Italian Partisans, and was awarded the Silver Medal for Military Valor.

His funeral was held at the Certosa di Bologna, with the city mayor Matteo Lepore, regional president Michele De Pascale and other officials praising him as one of the last living witnesses of the Liberation and a steadfast defender of democratic values.
