Sicily: President Schifani avoids resignation amid political crisis

Sicilian President Renato Schifani has avoided immediate resignation despite intense political pressure and internal friction within Forza Italia. Following recent judicial investigations involving regional officials and his former legal advisor, Schifani convened a regional council meeting where he addressed administrative matters rather than stepping down.

To address concerns regarding corruption and influence, the regional government approved a transparency bill. This legislation establishes a public registry of interest representatives and requires the documentation of all meetings between private interests and public officials, including informal contacts. The measure aims to increase accountability for decision-makers, including the president and regional assessors.

In addition to political developments, the administration approved an expanded recruitment plan. Under a new integrated organizational plan, the number of planned hires for the 2026-2028 period has been increased to 3,641, facilitated by an agreement with the Ministry of Economy and Finance to raise the turnover rate.
