Renato Schifani addresses political discourse and Sicilian governance

Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani has addressed the rising intensity of political discourse in the region. In a letter to LiveSicilia, Schifani argued that political opposition has frequently crossed the line from legitimate criticism into personal attacks and delegitimization. He expressed concern over the violence of political language, noting that social media often prioritizes immediate reactions and conflict over thoughtful reflection.

Schifani emphasized his commitment to governing Sicily despite these tensions, stating his goal is to move the region toward development rather than remaining stuck in permanent emergencies. He called for a return to political leadership based on competence and results rather than social media engagement.

Separately, Riccardo Castro, president of SEUS 118, responded to criticisms regarding emergency service deficiencies in the Catania-Ragusa-Siracusa area. Addressing reports of idle ambulances and service disruptions, Castro clarified that technical failures are a minor factor compared to chronic staffing shortages. He noted that between January and August 2026, the primary cause for vehicle downtime was a lack of driver-rescuers and medical personnel, a systemic issue the organization has flagged to authorities since 2022.
