Renault 8 Gordini: The evolution of a family sedan into a racing icon
Launched in the summer of 1962 as a successor to the Dauphine, the Renault 8 was initially designed as a conservative family sedan. Designed by Gaston Juchet and Philippe Charbonneaux, the vehicle featured a rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and was notable for including four disc brakes, a rare feature for its time.
To meet the demand for performance among French youth, Renault tasked Amédée Gordini with transforming the standard model into a competitive machine. The resulting Renault 8 Gordini significantly increased performance, with the first version producing 77.5 hp compared to the approximately 50 hp of the classic R8. This collaboration between Renault and Gordini produced one of the most influential French automobiles of the 20th century.
