Renault Boreal to reduce engine power to meet Brazilian emissions standards
Renault Geely do Brasil has announced that the Renault Boreal SUV will undergo a power reduction to comply with the new Proconve L8 emissions standards. The 1.3 turbo flex engine will see its output drop from 163 cv to 160 cv, while torque will remain unchanged at 27.5 kgfm.
Ariel Montenegro, president of Renault Geely do Brasil, confirmed the change during the presentation of the Niagara pickup. The new engine calibration will debut in the Niagara, scheduled for November, and will be applied to the Boreal for the 2027 model year.
This marks the third configuration for this engine in the Brazilian market. Originally imported from Spain in 2019 with 170 cv, the power was adjusted to 163 cv when local production began in 2025 via Horse, a joint venture between Renault and Geely. The manufacturer stated the recalibration is strictly for reducing pollutants and is not related to Industrialized Products Tax (IPI) brackets. The same 160 cv engine will also power the Niagara pickup, which is manufactured in Argentina.
