Renault CEO warns against over-reliance on retro-inspired success

Renault CEO Fabrice Cambolive has cautioned against over-reliance on the brand's recent success with retro-inspired electric models. While vehicles like the R5, R4, and Twingo have been highly successful, Cambolive stated in an interview that “whoever only lives in the past is lost.”

To balance the portfolio, Cambolive proposed a three-part strategy: one third consisting of iconic retro models, one third featuring “saga models” such as the Clio and Scenic, and a final third of entirely new designs free from nostalgic constraints. This approach aims to prevent the brand from becoming overly dependent on its historical legacy.

In a practical application of this design philosophy, the new all-electric Renault Twingo has entered the market. The compact city car, measuring approximately 3.80 meters in length, aims to modernize the charm of the original 1993 model without relying solely on retro aesthetics. It features a 27.5 kWh LFP battery, offering a practical urban range of approximately 200 kilometers under moderate driving conditions.
