Renault unveils R4 Plein Sud electric SUV with expansive canvas roof

Renault has launched the R4 Plein Sud, a new electric version of its compact SUV derived from the historic 4L. The model features a 92 cm‑long, 80 cm‑wide canvas roof that can be opened or closed in about ten seconds, either by button or voice command, and remains operable up to 90 km/h. The roof adds only 19 kg, limiting the WLTP range loss to 7 km, giving the vehicle a 392 km range on a 52 kWh battery and a 150 hp motor. It retains a 420‑litre boot, a maximum loading length of 2.20 m, and a 750 kg towing capacity. "We wanted to develop not only the vehicle’s versatility but also the experience and pleasure," said product manager Benjamin Journaux.

Alongside the Plein Sud, Renault presented several other R4 E‑Tech variants, including a Roland‑Garros edition with sport‑inspired interior trims, a JP4x4 concept featuring all‑wheel drive and higher ground clearance, and a Savane 4×4 concept with an additional rear electric motor. Pricing for the new R4 starts at €37,290. The launch aims to boost the appeal of Renault’s electric SUV line in a European market that is rapidly expanding in the compact B‑segment.
