Rende councilor calls for improved lighting and safety near University of Calabria

Rossella Gallo, a councilor for the Movimento 5 Stelle – Sinistra per Rende, has filed an inquiry requesting enhanced public lighting and vegetation maintenance along the routes connecting the University of Calabria campus to the Arcavacata district.

The request follows the death of Rahel Gebrezgi Mengesha and numerous reports of harassment, stalking, and alleged threats. Local residents and students have expressed concerns regarding safety, noting that the roads are narrow, lack sidewalks, and suffer from insufficient or nonexistent lighting. The presence of unmanaged vegetation further restricts pedestrian space, forcing students to walk close to passing vehicles, particularly during early evening hours.
