Rende, Italy to build new train station in Santa Maria di Settimo

The municipality of Rende is moving forward with a long‑awaited railway project to construct a new train station in the Santa Maria di Settimo area. The plan, agreed with the Region of Calabria, the neighbouring municipality of Montalto Uffugo and the University of Calabria, aims to relieve chronic overcrowding at the existing Castiglione Cosentino‑Quattromiglia junction, which sees daily congestion of commuters, tourists and students.

The new facility is expected to provide wider, modern platforms with improved accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and to enhance overall service efficiency for the growing local population. Local authorities stress that the collaboration between municipal, regional and university stakeholders is essential to complete the infrastructure upgrade.

If realised, the station would de‑congest the current rail hub, improve travel conditions along the Tyrrhenian coast and support the region’s economic and social development.
