Rendezvous Robotics raises $20 million for modular spacecraft technology
Rendezvous Robotics has secured $20 million in an oversubscribed seed funding round to develop modular spacecraft capable of autonomous assembly and reconfiguration in orbit. The financing was co-led by MaC Venture Capital and Toyota Ventures, with participation from the University of Michigan Endowment and several other investors.
The company is developing spacecraft composed of independent modular tiles that launch separately and then maneuver to connect in space. This method aims to bypass the physical size constraints imposed by traditional rocket fairings, which often limit the scale of antennas, power systems, and computing capacity.
A demonstration mission is planned for no earlier than April 2028. During this mission, seven independently deployed tiles will autonomously join in free space to form a single spacecraft, separate, and then reassemble into a different configuration. The technology is based on the TESSERAE modular self-assembly system, originally researched at MIT by co-founder Dr. Ariel Ekblaw. A separate demonstration involving 32 tiles is scheduled for the International Space Station in December 2026.
