Rene Benko granted house arrest in Austria
Rene Benko, the investor behind the collapsed Signa real estate empire, has been granted house arrest under electronic monitoring by the Innsbruck Regional Court. Benko had been in pretrial detention for nearly 21 months in an Innsbruck prison.
As part of the house arrest conditions, Benko will reside in a rented apartment near his family's villa. He is subject to strict limitations, including a daily one-hour allowance to leave the residence and twice-weekly shopping trips. He is prohibited from contacting former or current employees of the Signa Group or the INGB Private Foundation.
His legal counsel, Norbert Wess, argued that the transition was necessary to allow Benko to prepare for upcoming legal proceedings. Legal experts have noted that granting house arrest specifically to facilitate defense preparation is a novelty in Austrian judicial practice.
