Renesas Electronics to acquire Altium for $5.9 billion

Renesas Electronics has agreed to acquire the Australian printed circuit board (PCB) design software firm Altium in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately A$9.1 billion ($5.9 billion). The acquisition is intended to integrate Altium’s cloud-based design platform with Renesas’s semiconductor portfolio, aiming to streamline the electronics design process for global manufacturers.

This strategic move reflects a broader trend in the semiconductor industry toward combining hardware with digital engineering platforms to provide comprehensive design ecosystems. The integration is expected to support sectors such as automotive and industrial automation by reducing development complexity.

In addition to the acquisition news, Renesas reported a return to profitability for the second quarter of 2026. The company recorded a quarterly revenue of 418,449 million yen and a net profit of 149,184 million yen, marking an operational recovery from previous losses.
