Renesas expands AI capabilities with new Beijing robotics lab and Autoware partnership

Renesas Electronics Corporation has announced the opening of a Physical AI & Robotics Lab in Beijing, China. The facility is designed to help customers demonstrate, validate, and develop next-generation robotic systems, specifically focusing on the transition of AI from digital environments into physical systems that require real-time, deterministic behavior.

The company aims to expand its coverage of the humanoid robot bill of materials (BOM) from approximately 30% to 70% by leveraging its expertise in control, power, sensing, and software. The lab will serve as a hub for collaboration with universities, startups, and ecosystem partners within the Chinese robotics market.

In a separate strategic move, Renesas has joined the Autoware Foundation at its highest membership tier. This partnership aims to integrate Autoware’s open-source end-to-end AI software with Renesas R-Car system-on-chip (SoC) platforms. The collaboration is intended to support various levels of vehicle automation, ranging from Level 2 advanced driver-assistance systems to Level 4 autonomous robotaxis, providing manufacturers with a scalable, open-source foundation for AI-driven automotive applications.
