Renesas expands RZ/G Series with new 64-bit MPUs

Renesas Electronics Corporation has expanded its RZ/G Series with the introduction of two new 64-bit general-purpose microprocessors (MPUs): the RZ/G3L and the RZ/G3SE. These pin-compatible processors are designed for Human Machine Interface (HMI) and IoT edge systems, including industrial gateways, smart retail terminals, and medical devices.

The RZ/G3L features an integrated GPU for 3D graphics rendering and an H.264 video codec, making it suitable for applications requiring rich visual capabilities. The RZ/G3SE is tailored for devices with basic display needs, such as EV chargers and industrial status indicators. Both models utilize a CPU cluster with up to four Arm Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.2 GHz and a Cortex-M33 coprocessor at 200 MHz.

A key feature of the third-generation RZ/G Series is a proprietary power management architecture that allows standby power to drop to the 1 mW level in deep standby mode. This enables devices to maintain a Linux system in memory for rapid resumption of operation, supporting the requirements of always-on connectivity in industrial and IoT environments.
