Renewable Energy and Speed‑Limit Compliance Offer Major Climate and Cost Savings, Research Shows
A study published in a Nature Portfolio journal compared the climate and health impacts of investing $100 million in direct air capture (DAC) versus solar and wind farms across 22 regions of the United States from 2020 to 2050. Across all four DAC cost‑energy scenarios—including the current $1,000 per‑tonne level and a breakthrough $100 per‑tonne level—renewable‑energy projects delivered larger overall benefits, especially when DAC remained costly and energy‑intensive.
Separately, researchers at the University of Minnesota analyzed more than 120 million car trips in the United States. Their findings, published in Communications Sustainability, indicate that strict adherence to speed limits could save about $22 million (≈€19 million) each day, cut fuel use by over 25 million litres, and reduce CO₂ emissions by roughly 57 000 tonnes, while adding only about 54 seconds to average commute times. Both studies highlight substantial economic and environmental gains from low‑carbon policies and technologies.
