Renewable energy expansions in Poland and Germany
In Poland, the railway operator PKM Gdańsk is expanding its solar energy infrastructure. The company plans to increase its photovoltaic capacity on the PKM line from 50 kWp to 500 kWp. This expansion includes the installation of solar panels on the roofs of the Kiełpinek and Matarnia stops, alongside a new 500 kW energy storage system with a 2000 kWh capacity. Once completed, the project is expected to produce approximately 500 MWh of energy annually, covering about 25 percent of the electricity needs for the stops and the Local Control Center. The initiative aims to reduce the company's carbon footprint by approximately 239 tons of CO2 per year.
In Germany, the solar technology market is evolving with the introduction of solar-powered awnings by the startup Solar Markise. These systems, which combine sun protection with energy generation, are available in two power versions: 1.35 kW and 1.8 kW. Constructed from retractable photovoltaic fabric on aluminum frames, the products are designed for easy installation on building facades. The manufacturer offers a 10-year warranty, with potential annual savings for users ranging from 480 to 640 euros.
