Renewable energy faces supply chain and sourcing challenges
The transition to green energy, including solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, faces significant hurdles within the global supply chain. Key challenges include the sourcing of rare materials such as lithium, cobalt, and rare-earth elements, which are often located in remote or politically unstable regions. These sourcing issues can lead to supply disruptions and raise environmental and ethical concerns.
Globally, renewable energy adoption is increasing. In Europe, countries have made progress toward United Nations goals; for example, Germany reached 33.9% net usage in 2016, Italy reached 16.2%, and Portugal reached 78%. China has emerged as a leader in wind energy, utilizing its extensive coastline to build significant capacity, though distribution issues remain in areas outside of major industrial zones.
