Renewable energy sector sees growth in global employment and bioenergy supply

Global renewable energy trends show significant growth in both employment and energy supply. In the European Union, clean technology jobs have more than doubled since 2010, with approximately 951,000 people directly employed in the sector as of 2023. Wind energy is the largest employer in the EU, providing roughly 273,500 jobs, followed by solar photovoltaics with 227,300. The battery sector is noted as the fastest-growing segment, with employment increasing by an average of nearly 35% annually between 2010 and 2023.

On a global scale, bioenergy accounted for approximately 9% of the total world energy supply in 2023, providing 56 EJ of energy. This makes it the largest single source of renewable energy. While fossil fuels still account for over 80% of global energy, renewables contributed 15% of the total supply. China leads the world in bioenergy-generated electricity, producing 209 TWh in 2024, which represents 30% of global production, followed by Brazil and the United States.
