Spain transport alternatives expand following high-speed rail accident

Following a high-speed rail accident in Urda, Toledo, on October 28, which resulted in at least 68 fatalities, transport alternatives between Madrid and Andalusia have been significantly expanded. The accident has caused a suspension of high-speed services on the Madrid-Sevilla line, with Renfe potentially maintaining ticket sales restrictions until December 13.

To mitigate the impact, Iberia is adding 208 flights and 39,164 seats between Madrid and five Andalusian airports (Sevilla, Málaga, Jerez, Granada, and Almería) from November 9 to 30. Other airlines, including Air Europa, Wizz Air, and Volotea, are also increasing capacity on these routes.

On the ground, bus companies have sextupled their offerings to Andalusia. Renfe is maintaining a special bus service between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Puertollano until November 12, offering 16 daily services. Additionally, the mobility platform WAIIS is launching a carpooling feature on November 9 that provides discounts for trips following major high-speed rail corridors.
