Renfe maintains aging train fleet in Alicante despite Valencia upgrades

Renfe has confirmed that it does not currently plan to renew the commuter train fleet serving the Alicante-Murcia and Alicante-Sant Vicent del Raspeig lines. While the company is reorganizing its fleet in Valencia to reduce the average age of its trains from 27.8 to 17.2 years, Alicante continues to rely on diesel units from the 592 series, known as 'camellos', which were manufactured between 1981 and 1984.

These trains are over 40 years old. Although some units have undergone interior and system reforms, their structural age remains unchanged. Local labor unions note that the lack of electrification on the Alicante-Murcia connection is a primary factor limiting renewal options, as modern trends favor electric units.
