Renfe restores double-track rail service in Gipuzkoa

Renfe has restored double-track rail circulation between Donostia and Pasaia following the completion of the “third thread” infrastructure works. The project, which involved adapting the track for High-Speed Rail (TAV) between Irun and Hernani, concludes a period of periodic service disruptions that began last summer.

The completion of these works will lead to an immediate increase in commuter services on the Irun-Brinkola line, rising from 53 to 66 trips on workdays. A full restoration of previous schedules will occur gradually over the coming weeks.

Technical improvements included expanding the gauge in the Gaintxurizketa and Loiola tunnels, replacing walkways and overpasses, enabling freight sidings in Hernani, and reforming several electrical substations. The new infrastructure between Astigarraga and Irun allows for the integration of both international and conventional Iberian gauge trains.
