Renfe to allow electric scooters on trains starting September 7

Renfe has announced that starting September 7, 2026, electric scooters and other Personal Mobility Vehicles (PMV) will be permitted on its Cercanías, Medium Distance, and Long Distance train services. This decision revokes a temporary ban implemented in 2023 and aligns with the new Spanish regulatory framework, Law 5/2025, which adapts national legislation to European Directive 2021/2118.

To ensure safety, Renfe has established strict requirements for transport. Scooters must be officially approved, registered with the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), and possess a visible identification plate or license plate. Users must also provide a valid certificate of circulation and mandatory civil liability insurance. During travel, vehicles must remain folded and turned off at all times. Charging batteries from train power outlets is strictly prohibited. Scooters must be stored in designated luggage areas or locations that do not obstruct aisles, doors, emergency exits, or priority spaces for persons with reduced mobility.

The measure aims to improve intermodality by facilitating ‘first and last mile’ travel between homes, stations, and workplaces. While the policy applies to most of the national network, Rodalies in Catalonia and Cercanías Euskadi are currently excluded from this change.
