Renfe restores electric scooter access on Spanish trains

Renfe has announced that starting Monday, September 7, it will once again allow passengers to transport electric scooters on its trains. This measure applies to Cercanías, Media Distancia, and Larga Distancia services, as well as AVE. However, the policy does not currently apply to Rodalies and Cercanías services in Euskadi.

To ensure safety, the scooters must meet specific requirements: they must be approved models registered with the DGT, possess an identification plate, have mandatory civil liability insurance, and carry a circulation certificate. Once on board, scooters must be folded, turned off, and stored in designated luggage compartments. They may be carried free of charge as special luggage alongside a single piece of hand luggage.

The decision follows the implementation of a new state regulatory framework for Personal Mobility Vehicles (VMP) and comes after a ban was imposed in December 2023 due to battery-related fire concerns. Renfe aims to promote sustainable, intermodal mobility for the approximately seven million electric scooter users in Spain.

Separately, Renfe and Ouigo have extended their 'Verano Joven' benefits into the autumn. Young travelers aged 18 to 30 who traveled during the official government campaign may be eligible for promotional codes, including free tickets or 50% discounts, for travel between October and December.
