Renfe to restart bus‑company tender in September after court backs project
Spain's state railway operator Renfe announced it will reopen the tender for a dedicated bus company in September. The move follows a decision by the Tribunal Administrativo Central de Recursos Contractuales (TACRC) that affirmed the core premises of the project while overturning some of the trade‑union objections that had led to the earlier macro‑contest being annulled.
Renfe said the revised tender will incorporate the court’s recommendations, including configuring the contract as a single national lot, tightening solvency and technical requirements, specifying a minimum fleet size and defining the project’s duration. The bus service is designed to provide alternative transport when rail lines are disrupted by incidents or works, covering key regions such as Madrid, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and Andalusia. The original plan, valued at roughly €923 million, envisaged a fleet of up to 300‑500 vehicles.
Despite the setback, Renfe reiterated that the initiative remains a strategic pillar of its mobility strategy and is not intended to compete with existing road‑transport operators.
