Renfe workers announce strike in Spain over safety agreements

The Semaf Drivers' Union has called for a strike across all Renfe Group companies this Thursday. The union cites an “administrative blockade” regarding previously signed agreements on railway safety.

Renfe has disputed the strike's reasoning, stating that the issues raised—such as driving time regulations and labor inspections—are outside the company's decision-making capacity. The operator also maintains that it has fully met all obligations from a February agreement intended to reinforce the railway system following the Adamuz accident.

To mitigate disruption, Renfe has established minimum service levels:

• Cercanías (Commuter): 75% service during peak hours (06:00–09:00, 13:30–15:30, and 18:30–20:30) and 50% during off-peak hours. • Media Distancia (Medium Distance): 65% of usual services. • High Speed and Long Distance: 73% of usual services. • Freight: 26% of scheduled services.
