Rengasdengklok Incident: The abduction of Soekarno and Hatta

The Rengasdengklok Incident occurred on August 16, 1945, when a group of young activists forcibly moved Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta from Jakarta to Rengasdengklok, Karawang. The movement aimed to pressure the leaders to proclaim Indonesian independence immediately following Japan's defeat in the Pacific War, seeking to avoid any influence from the Japanese-established Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI).

During the early hours of August 16, the youth group, including figures such as Soekarni, Wikana, and Chaerul Saleh, sought to capitalize on the power vacuum before Allied forces arrived. While Soekarno initially resisted, wanting to wait for official news from Japan, the activists relocated the leaders to the home of a local farmer, Djiaw Kie Siong, to ensure they remained free from Japanese interference.

The standoff concluded after Achmad Soebardjo negotiated with the youth group, guaranteeing that the proclamation would take place on August 17, 1945. Following these negotiations, the group returned to Jakarta and convened at the residence of Admiral Tadashi Maeda to prepare for the declaration of independence.
