Renkum receives safety advice for Kievitsdel intersection
An independent traffic investigation commissioned by the municipality of Renkum has recommended restoring a former bicycle crossing at the Kievitsdel intersection in Doorwerth to improve safety.
The study, conducted by Goudappel, follows concerns raised by residents, the Cyclists' Union, and Veilig Verkeer Nederland. Since the province of Gelderland redesigned the intersection in late 2025, the southwest bicycle crossing was removed, forcing cyclists traveling from Heelsum to Doorwerth to use three different regulated crossings.
Findings indicate that most cyclists avoid the official route, instead crossing the intersection in two stages and riding part of the way against the direction of traffic along the Van der Molenallee. While the investigation noted this does not immediately cause dangerous situations, it creates a significant traffic safety risk. The report concluded that restoring the original crossing is the most logical solution to restore direct connections, reduce waiting times, and prevent undesirable traffic behavior.
