Rennes administrative court fines woman for AI-generated tax appeal

The administrative court of Rennes has imposed a 500 euro fine on a taxpayer in Brittany for submitting an abusive legal request. The woman had attempted to contest VAT arrears and associated penalties for 2023.

The court noted that the request lacked essential details and appeared to be “manifestly written with the help of an artificial intelligence tool,” according to an order issued on August 19, 2026. Additionally, the taxpayer failed to follow the mandatory procedure of first filing a claim with the territorial services of the General Directorate of Public Finances.

The court warned against using AI to generate legal requests, noting that while such tools may seem convincing, they can contain hollow or erroneous arguments. The tribunal stated that the fine was not disproportionate, as the penalty for such actions could reach up to 10,000 euros.
