Rennes faces surge in graffiti amid drought cleaning restrictions

The city of Rennes is experiencing a significant increase in graffiti and vandalism across its historic center, particularly in the north-central sector. During a municipal council meeting on September 28, 2026, Mayor Nathalie Appéré acknowledged the decline in the city's ability to manage these markings over the summer.

The municipality attributed the accumulation of tags to drought-related water restrictions. Since mid-August, prefectural orders have prohibited the cleaning of building facades to conserve water, a measure that even applies to professional cleaning services. This has prevented municipal agents from erasing illegal inscriptions.

Opposition leaders have criticized the situation, describing the state of the streets as a “disaster” and calling for stricter sanctions. While the mayor admitted to the degradation in certain sectors, the debate remains focused on the lack of resources and the legal constraints preventing immediate cleanup.
