Reno Omokri warns Atiku Abubakar's policies could trigger fuel smuggling

Reno Omokri, the Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua, has warned that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s proposed economic policies could trigger massive petroleum smuggling.

During his campaign for the 2027 general election, Atiku Abubakar stated he intends to reopen Nigeria’s land borders and reintroduce fuel subsidies to revive trans-border trade. Omokri countered that combining these two measures would facilitate the large-scale smuggling of subsidized petroleum products to neighboring nations.

Omokri noted that under previous subsidy regimes with relatively open borders, significant volumes of fuel were allegedly smuggled out. He cited historical claims that approximately 25 million litres of the 66.1 million litres supplied daily were lost to smuggling.
