Renoir Museum thieves steal four paintings in France

Two thieves targeted the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, early Tuesday morning, stealing four paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The heist, which lasted approximately five minutes, began around 5:48 a.m. when the museum's alarm was triggered. The suspects reportedly entered by cutting a fence and used specialized tools, such as an electric saw, to remove the canvases from their frames.

While the thieves successfully absconded with two paintings, they abandoned two others in the museum's garden during their escape. The recovered works include ‘Portrait de Madame Stephen Pichon’ and ‘Coco lisant’. The two missing paintings are ‘Madame Colonna Romano’ and ‘Jeune femme au puits’, the latter of which is on loan from the Musée d'Orsay. The total value of the four stolen works is estimated at approximately 9 million euros.

Local authorities, including Mayor Bryan Masson, have characterized the incident as a highly organized crime and an attack on the region's cultural heritage. The suspects were captured on surveillance footage but managed to evade police. An investigation is currently being led by the Subdirectorate for the Fight against Organized Crime.
