Renoir Museum theft: Two paintings recovered and six arrested in France

Authorities in southern France have recovered two paintings by Pierre-Auguste Renoir that were stolen from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer last month. The two recovered works are ‘Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano’ (1910) and ‘Young Woman at the Well’ (1886).

Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the heist, which occurred in the early hours of September 8. During the robbery, which lasted less than three minutes, thieves cut through a fence, smashed a window, and used an electric saw to remove four paintings from their mounts. The total value of the stolen artworks was estimated at approximately 9 million euros. Two of the paintings were abandoned in the museum's garden as the perpetrators fled after an alarm was triggered.

Bryan Masson, the mayor of Cagnes-sur-Mer, expressed relief at the recovery of the pieces, noting they are a vital part of the city’s history. The incident has renewed discussions regarding security measures at French cultural institutions following other high-profile thefts, such as the robbery of crown jewels at the Louvre.
