Renos Charalampidis critiques age bias over Lupita Nyong'o's casting as Helen
Greek actor and director Renos Charalampidis posted on Instagram that he is not troubled by the decision to cast African‑American actress Lupita Nyong'o as the “Beautiful Helen” in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film Odyssia. He said the casting of a Black actress is comparable to the choice of a white Anglo‑Saxon actor for Odysseus, and that the focus should not be on ethnicity.
Charalampidis emphasized that his real concern is “age racism”: a woman must be twenty‑something to be deemed beautiful. He quoted himself, “Why can’t the beautiful Helen be 40, 50 or 60? This is the real issue, not whether she is African.” His comments added to a wider debate in Greece about representation, gender stereotypes, and the standards of beauty in cinema.
