Renovation of Zlín Municipal Theatre Begins, Construction Noise Affects Rehearsals
The historic Zlín Municipal Theatre, a protected cultural monument, has started a major renovation that will replace its entire façade, windows and doors. The work, budgeted at nearly 80 million Czech crowns (excluding VAT), began in July and is scheduled to continue until at least September of the following year.
Mayor Jiří Korec noted the difficulty of coordinating night‑time construction with performances, saying, “The theatre would preferably stay open while we work at night, but that isn’t possible.” Technical director Karel Papežík added that rehearsal spaces will be shifted within the building to minimise disruption, and that the project will eventually remove the safety fence that has surrounded the theatre since a collapse of limestone slabs three years ago.
The city of Zlín and the Zlín Region each contribute 20 million crowns to the project. Temporary facilities, such as a new entrance for disabled visitors and a temporary stage, are being installed to allow the theatre season to start on schedule, with a formal opening planned for 5 September.
