Renowned Italian conductor Bruno Campanella dies at 83

Bruno Campanella, the celebrated Italian conductor noted for his mastery of the belcanto repertoire, died at age 83 after a long illness. Born in Bari on 6 January 1943, he studied composition and conducting at the Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini in Florence and earned a philosophy degree with a thesis on Buddhist religions.

Campanella became a leading interpreter of 19th‑century Italian opera, especially the works of Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. He served as music director of the Teatro Regio di Torino from 1992 to 1995, later appearing as guest conductor at La Scala, La Fenice, the Rome Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Paris Opéra, the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna Staatsoper and other major houses worldwide. He collaborated with singers such as Cecilia Barton, Juan Diego Flórez and Natalie Dessay.

His contributions were recognised with honors including the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (2002) and the Oscar della Lirica in China (2017). The Italian cultural community has entered a period of mourning, acknowledging his lasting impact on opera performance and recording.
