Renowned Welsh theatre director Peter Gill dies at 86

Peter Gill, the celebrated Welsh playwright, director and actor, died on 4 August 2026 at the age of 86. Born in Cardiff in 1939, he began his career as an actor before moving into directing, becoming a pivotal figure in British theatre for six decades.

Gill joined the Royal Court Theatre as assistant director in 1964 and was promoted to associate director in 1970, where he revived the works of D. H. Lawrence and staged his own early plays. In 1976 he became artistic director of Riverside Studios in Hammersmith, opening the venue with productions such as As You Like It and a noted version of The Cherry Orchard. He later served as associate director of the National Theatre from 1980 to 1997 and founded the National Theatre Studio in 1984, leading it until 1990. He was appointed OBE in 1980 for services to theatre.

His death prompted tributes from actors and colleagues, including Welsh star Luke Evans, who credited Gill with launching his career. Gill is remembered for his gentle intelligence, emotional delicacy and lasting influence on British theatre.
