Rental disputes in Norway increase by 20 percent

The Norwegian Rent Disputes Tribunal (Husleietvistutvalget) reported a nearly 20 percent increase in cases last year, totaling 5,146 disputes between landlords and tenants.

Tryg Forsikring is warning landlords that standard home insurance typically does not cover losses related to rental agreements, such as unpaid rent, delayed move-outs, or property damage caused by tenants. In one cited instance, a landlord faced losses exceeding 200,000 NOK due to a tenant who stopped paying rent and left significant damage to walls, doors, and kitchen cabinets.

To mitigate risks, experts recommend that landlords conduct thorough background checks, use updated rental contracts, and document the property’s condition with photos and video both before and after a tenancy.
