Rental Kazoku film expands to 50 theaters following consecutive sell-outs
The independent film ‘Rental Kazoku’, directed by Ryunosuke Uesaka, is set for a nationwide expansion in Japan following a period of unprecedented success. After selling out online tickets for 22 consecutive days at its initial venue, Shinjuku K's cinema, the film is expanding its theatrical run to 50 locations.
The expansion will occur in two stages: the first phase begins on August 21 across 25 theaters in regions including Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Osaka, while the second phase will follow on August 28 to reach the full 50-theater count.
Uesaka, making his directorial debut, described the phenomenon as a ‘miracle happening in movie theaters,’ noting that the film's reach was driven by audience support despite having a limited budget. The human drama, which explores family bonds through the lens of a protagonist using a ‘rental family’ service to care for a mother with dementia, previously won the Grand Prix at the 23rd Nakanoshima Film Festival.
