Rental prices rise across Austrian states
Rental prices in several Austrian states are experiencing significant upward trends. In Vorarlberg, asking rents rose by 2 percent during the first nine months of 2026, reaching an average of 19.5 euros per square meter. This results in a monthly gross rent of approximately 1,362 euros for a 70-square-meter apartment, which is 239 euros higher than the Austrian national average. Despite a 37 percent increase in the supply of rental properties in Vorarlberg—the highest growth rate among all federal states—prices have continued to climb.
In Styria, the situation is even more acute, with rents increasing by 14 percent according to ImmoScout24 data, marking the highest increase in the country. The KPÖ party has criticized these developments, arguing that housing should be a fundamental right rather than a luxury for private investors. The party has specifically voiced concerns regarding municipalities like Judenburg, Kindberg, and Bruck, which are planning to sell municipal housing to address budget deficits, a move they claim will exacerbate long-term housing shortages.
