Rentis fire breaks out at waste site, triggering 112 emergency alert

A large fire broke out on the afternoon of Friday, September 18, 2026, in Rentis, Greece, at a plot containing waste and flammable materials such as tires and pallets. The blaze occurred at the intersection of 28th of October and Strategou Makrygianni streets, near the Olympic volleyball stadium and several businesses.

The fire produced dense black smoke visible from a distance, prompting the 112 emergency service to issue an alert. Residents in the Agios Ioannis Rentis area were instructed to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed to protect themselves from the smoke.

Firefighting efforts involved approximately 12 firefighters and up to six vehicles, supported by water tankers from the Municipality of Rentis. There have been reports of explosions in the area, though the cause has not been confirmed. The Piraeus Arson Crimes Investigation Unit has been mobilized to determine the cause of the fire. As of the latest reports, there is no official information regarding injuries or damage to nearby facilities.
