Renton City Council delays vote on camping ban ordinance

The Renton City Council has delayed a vote on Ordinance 6199, a proposed measure that would criminalize camping on city-owned property as a misdemeanor and authorize police to issue trespass orders.

The delay stems from a debate regarding the level of assistance officers must provide to individuals violating the ordinance. While the council previously voted to change the language from ‘encouraged’ to ‘required’ regarding the offering of services to offenders, Councilmember James Alberson has requested the wording revert to ‘encouraged’ to allow officers more discretion.

City attorney Shane Moloney noted that the current draft lacks specific details on what services must be offered or the consequences for failing to do so. Councilmember Carmen Rivera expressed opposition to reverting the language, stating that changing it back to ‘encouraged’ would be unfair to the unhoused community and potentially shield city employees from liability rather than addressing the core issue.
