Rep. Adam Smith says Pentagon withholding US casualty data in Iran conflict

U.S. Representative Adam Smith, the lead Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, told CNN’s “Outfront" program that the Trump administration and the Pentagon have not provided clear information on wounded or killed American service members and on equipment losses in the war with Iran. Smith said he receives reports from contacts at U.S. bases in Jordan and Iraq indicating injuries of 20‑30 personnel, yet the Department of Defense has not confirmed the figures. He described the lack of transparency as “concerning” and likened it to a dictator controlling information, emphasizing that Congress and the public are being kept out of the loop. The conflict, launched by President Trump in February 2020, remains widely unpopular in U.S. polls.
